Welcome to our first blog post detailing Ngaio Leather Co.’s design philosophy and our priorities when designing our products.
We have three things at the forefront of our mind when designing:
- Practicality – how easy and practical are our products to use in everyday life?
- Durability – will our products last a long time and are they able to withstand a bit of rough treatment
- A minimalistic aesthetic

All of these aspects are incorporated into each of our products and designs.
In part one, we will be going over the first aspect – practicality.
Any bag, wallet, or accessory has to be practical to use in everyday life. Every single detail and design in our bags and wallets have a purpose and a practical use. There is no detail that is there just for show.
Let’s start with our Mainichi and Anh bags (identical except for dimensions).
We decided to go with a rolltop design to allow our customers to be able to carry all things of different shapes and sizes. If you are travelling light, the bag is thin and lightweight. If you have lots of things inside, the bag’s design means that it will stretch and the adjustable strap will keep everything secure. There is a button to close the bag, which you can even keep undone for extra room. Our adjustable shoulder straps are wide and have padding for extra comfort. There is a handle at the top if you ever need to carry it by hand.

Inside, there is a foam divider with a leather and velcro strap to securely protect your laptop. There are two open pockets for belongings (such as keys, glasses etc) that you might need easy access to. Finally, there is a zip pocket for anything that needs to be securely stored.

Unlike a lot of leather bags, our bags are lightweight and easy to carry (just over 1 kg).
Moving onto our wallets, they have six card holders that can hold two cards each. They are designed so that cards slide smoothly in. There is a small pocket with button should you need to store any coins as well as a noteholder. There is a button to secure the wallet when closed.

We know that each of our customers will appreciate the effort we have put into our designs in their everyday life.
Keep checking our socials and website for parts two and three on our design philosophy.
